Blemish-prone skin often leads people to add too many strong products at once. A better starting point is usually a simple routine that balances cleansing, one targeted treatment, hydration and sun protection.

Step 1: Cleanse gently

Choose a cleanser that removes oil, sunscreen and makeup without making the skin feel stripped. Aggressive cleansing can make a routine harder to tolerate.

Step 2: Choose one main treatment

Depending on your cosmetic goals and product availability, ingredients commonly found in blemish-focused skincare include salicylic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide and exfoliating acids.

Do not introduce several treatment products at once if you are trying to understand what your skin tolerates.

Step 3: Moisturize

Acne-prone skin can still be dehydrated or irritated. A lightweight moisturizer can help keep the routine balanced.

Step 4: Use sunscreen

Sun protection is especially important if your routine includes exfoliating acids or if post-blemish marks are a concern.

What about pimple patches?

Hydrocolloid-style patches can be useful as a physical covering for individual blemishes and can discourage touching. They are a targeted accessory rather than a complete acne routine.

Simple AM routine

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Optional treatment serum
  3. Moisturizer
  4. Sunscreen

Simple PM routine

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. One targeted treatment
  3. Moisturizer

When cosmetic skincare is not enough

If breakouts are painful, cystic, scarring or persistent, a cosmetic routine alone may not be sufficient. Seek appropriate professional care rather than repeatedly adding stronger over-the-counter products.
