Moisturizer is one of the most useful steps in almost any skincare routine, but the right product does not have to be the richest one. Texture, climate, skin type and the rest of your routine all matter.

What does a moisturizer do?

A moisturizer generally combines ingredients that attract water, soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.

Humectants

Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid help attract water to the skin surface.

Emollients

Emollients help smooth and soften the skin, improving texture and comfort.

Occlusives

Occlusive ingredients help reduce water loss by forming a more protective layer over the skin.

Gel vs lotion vs cream

  • Gel: often lighter and popular in humid climates or oilier skin routines.
  • Lotion: balanced texture that works for many skin types.
  • Cream: richer texture that may suit dry skin or nighttime use.

Do oily skin types need moisturizer?

Yes, oily skin can still be dehydrated. A lighter moisturizer may be more comfortable than skipping moisturizer entirely.

What if you use retinol or acids?

A moisturizer can be especially useful when the routine contains exfoliating or retinoid products that may increase dryness or sensitivity.
