Patch testing can be a useful precaution when introducing a new skincare product, especially if your skin is reactive or the product contains active ingredients. It cannot guarantee that a product will never cause irritation, but it may help identify an obvious reaction before full-face use.

What is a patch test?

A patch test means applying a small amount of a product to a limited area before using it more broadly.

A practical cosmetic patch-test approach

  1. Choose a small, discreet area such as the side of the jaw or behind the ear.
  2. Apply a small amount as directed.
  3. Repeat according to the product’s normal frequency for a few applications.
  4. Watch for persistent redness, swelling, burning, itching or discomfort.

What patch testing cannot tell you

A small-area test does not perfectly predict how your entire face will respond. Some irritation develops only with repeated use, larger application areas or combinations with other products.

Should every product be patch tested?

Not everyone patch tests every basic cleanser or moisturizer, but it can be especially useful for people with a history of sensitivity or when introducing stronger actives.

What if you react?

Stop using the product on that area. If the reaction is severe, persistent or involves swelling or difficulty breathing, seek appropriate medical care.
